Media Monitors invites media experts to discuss communications strategies in changing times in Singapore

For Immediate Release 04 December 2009

Singapore, 04 December 2009 – Media Monitors Pte Ltd, the leading media intelligence company in the Asia Pacific, held an expert panel discussion recently to address the most popular topics relating to trends in the Singapore media landscape. The event received an overwhelming response, attended by approximately 80 corporate communicators and public relations professionals.

The event presented a unique format whereby participants were setting the agenda, posting questions relating to trends within the media industry, social media, the new audience, cross cultural communication, media intermediation and paid versus free content. Guest expert panelists, leaders in their field across corporate, government and agency sectors were presenting their views and insights into dealing with new media.

The panelists included moderator Leon Hudson, Director of Sales and Client Services South East Asia, Media Monitors, Dr Jim Macnamara, Consultant, Media Monitors – CARMA Asia Pacific, Professor of Public Communication, University of Technology, Sydney, Joe Nguyen, Vice President, Southeast Asia, ComScore, Inc John Davidson, former editor, Marketing Magazine Singapore, Sonya Madeira Stamp, Managing Partner, Rice Communications Pte Ltd, Cameron Buckley, General Manager – South East Asia, Media Monitors and Quak Hiang Whai, Media Consultant.

Dr Jim Macnamara, Consultant, Media Monitors – CARMA Asia Pacific, Professor of Public Communication, University of Technology, Sydney, discussed emergent communication practices in the 21st century. He talked about the current trend of two-way communication amongst the new media audience. He also emphasized that it is very important to listen to consumers, what they want and the issues consumers face as consumers express their views and opinions in blogs.

In relation to that, Joe Nguyen, Vice President, Southeast Asia at comScore, Inc presented the latest media trends on Singapore’s top social networking sites based on the various categories. He also showed the increasing trend of social networking users in Asia Pacific.

As a former editor at Marketing Magazine Singapore with vast experience in the media industry, John Davidson addressed questions on today’s public relations and journalism practices which have changed tremendously and the need for the audience to seek accuracy and credibility in blogs, noting the content are mostly personal opinions as opposed to journalists writing news stories and confined to a journalistic code of ethics.

Sonya Madeira Stamp, Managing Partner at Rice Communications Pte Ltd, informed that social media now provides an emerging news platform to get in touch with consumers as most top stories break through online media as opposed to the traditional media publishing news breaking story hours later.

Cameron Buckley, General Manager – South East Asia for Media Monitors made a comparison between being a traditionalist versus an advocate of utilising new media in public relations – advocates, knowing how to utilize and interact with news sources via both desktop and mobile devices. In relation to social media, he also noted the importance of blogs which may impact the reputation of a brand or organisation. Mr Buckley also noted that the best way to build intelligence and assist media strategy was in using comprehensive measurement tools such as the CARMA methodology to analyse media coverage.

Quak Hiang Whai, a Media Consultant further informed that consumers are prepared to subscribe to quality online content and he is predicting that mobile content will grow further than online content in Singapore. Hiang Whai reiterated and supported views from other panelists that articles written by journalists are more trustworthy and credible. He also added that journalists now not only write in traditional media
but they write in online media too.

This event is one of the many events organised by Media Monitors to not only assist clients across government, corporate and public relations sectors to make sense of the media but also to network with their peers and keep abreast of the myriad of changes in today’s communications environment.
